PA State Police Enforcing Trailer Regulations Since July 1—DOT Numbers on 10000 Pound Rigs

If your truck or trailer is lettered with a farm name or business name and the truck and trailer combination gross over
10000 pounds you will be asked to prove you are not in commerce.  Any person who makes money from horse activities
is in commerce and is required to have a US DOT number registered and displayed at least 2” high on the doors of the
power unit.

While many suggest having a farm name painted on a trailer to prevent theft doing so puts you in commerce and
requires you to obtain a DOT number under current regulations. Remember also that any trailer over 3000 pounds
gross weight must have brakes, lights, registration and inspection stickers along with proper safety equipment. Safety
equipment includes chains, break a way brakes, 6 or more flares, spare tires, tools, chocks, and a fire extinguisher.
Vehicles grossing over 26000 pounds require a properly endorsed CDL and medical certificate and the operator must
be over 21 to cross state lines.
